Background of the Study
Point-of-Sale (POS) technology has revolutionized retail operations by streamlining transaction processes, improving inventory management, and enhancing customer service. As a critical component of modern retail infrastructure, POS systems enable businesses to efficiently handle sales, track inventory, and analyze customer data (Chen et al., 2023). The adoption of POS technology is particularly relevant for grocery stores, where efficiency and accuracy in transactions are vital.
Katsina State, known for its burgeoning small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), has experienced increasing adoption of POS systems in grocery stores. However, the extent to which these technologies contribute to business efficiency in this region remains unclear. While studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of POS technology in developed economies (Hernandez & Smith, 2024), there is limited research on its impact in the context of developing regions like Katsina State.
Factors such as cost, technological literacy, and infrastructural challenges influence the adoption and utilization of POS systems in grocery stores. Understanding how these systems improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction can provide valuable insights for both retailers and policymakers aiming to enhance the retail sector in Katsina State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing adoption of POS technology, many grocery stores in Katsina State continue to face operational inefficiencies, such as inaccurate inventory records, long customer wait times, and difficulties in tracking sales. These challenges persist despite the potential of POS systems to address them. The lack of empirical research on the effectiveness of POS technology in Katsina State's retail sector limits the ability of store owners to fully leverage its benefits.
Additionally, barriers such as high implementation costs, inadequate technical support, and limited technological awareness hinder the widespread adoption of POS systems. This study aims to bridge the gap in knowledge by examining how POS technology impacts retail business efficiency in Katsina State's grocery stores.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on grocery stores in Katsina State that have adopted or are in the process of adopting POS technology. It does not cover other retail formats, such as supermarkets or online stores. Limitations include the potential for respondent bias and the generalizability of findings to other regions.
